… went for a walk up the Gannel—a grey César-Franck symphony day—all the houses ugly, and the people meaningless, and the gulls sad. There was a conceited little redshank bowing at his reflection. I got back and read straight through, with a break for tea (now downstairs), Charles Morgan’s ‘Portrait in a Mirror’—I think a very beautiful love-story—it moved and impressed me a lot. … zwk zwr zds zwl zbn zem

Little school news, socialism defeated [in school debate] 27-25, all speakers pro, Kennedy spoke badly. Back, tea, I read ‘The Circle of Life’ by Kenneth Walker—many striking similarities to Daddy’s ‘Fears may be Liars’, but he came to a conclusion which I don’t quite understand. Sometimes, perhaps not often enough, I realise just how little I do understand. zcb zdb zpn zby zfl zmw

News: Big Russian victories with many cut off [German] divisions in the past week—S. front. Italy bridgehead [Anzio] has been a little precarious. Churchill wrote another letter for Conservative bye-election candidate—Party truce = vote Right. Some hereditary Duke or something, who got leave for the nomination by ? means, but you can’t blame the young fellow, he knows nothing of politics—as Maxton (?) [a veteran left-wing MP] said. Bevan made a fuss re-corruption in the house—exaggerated, but started useful discussion I think. zru zlb zpn zpl
