Friday 17th

Whoopee! My photos arrived by the morning post—the grebe  ones are very successful indeed … I also got:—a good one of my train, a nice one of Mother, a nice one of the river, a windmill, and one of P up a tree. … zph

Saturday 18th

… I was told that I had to have my photo taken for a passport photo in case I was going abroad because of the war. We tried the place twice but it was shut. … In the end Mr. Oakley took my photo, and I wrote a very worried letter asking what it was all about. zev zem zfl

Monday 20th

More worries etc.—I got a letter which made things cheerfuller, then Frank told me something. Nora and Margaret are going [abroad] definitely in about a fortnight, they wanted me to go. Did I want to? NO! But – – ?!? Miserable. Went about a little glum all day until after tea, when I rang up Mother and she explained it all. It would be pretty nasty here but if I wanted I could definitely stay. … I did. Daddy was going to join the RAMC [Royal Army Medical Corps], Mother going to be a nurse, John still at Chatham, Martin at Swanage. Nora and Margaret shortly in S. Africa with W. Ernest [uncle]. … Me school. zev zfl zmw zsc
