Saturday 7th

… A free afternoon for warships week [fund-raising campaign], in which I went to town, had a hair-cut, saw the march past, looked at the school toy shop (awful high prices!), bought a book ‘How to draw birds’ (2/6d) and also a loaf (3½d) … zpg zch zsh

In the evening there was a debate—’In the opinion of this house the British character is fundamentally hypocritical’. I was going to speak, but someone else got in first. Pretty funny speeches … We, the motion, won 33—20. zdb zop

 

Monday 9th

… Saw Max in evening, … discussed means of getting interested people to talk to—as I feel annoyed at smallness of views of people here. ztc zop zem zsy

 

Wednesday 11th

Clear morning, later grey, no rain. … RJC saw flashes, and heard a plane, St Evell. zwr zar

 

Saturday 14th

… After tea, Toad of Toad Hall was performed—rather poor, I thought—scenes too cut, puppets too unmanageable. zth

 

Sunday 15th

… After tidying the room I went along the headland with RJC to the big cave, where he smoked a cigarette. I also had one, but sucked too fast so it lasted only 2 mins. Thank goodness I don’t like it enough to want to. … zsu zwk zmb

After lunch I went up the Gannel with C, W and B—too many homo ‘sapiens’ about—no birds. We were nearly blown up (slight hyperbole) by a ‘malteser’ bag, which had been tied to a stick, lit with a match, and thrown down into the mud. Luckily it went out, and I took it back. It contained a grey crystalline substance. … zwk zwl zgk zda zac
